As soon as you have your wedding ensemble finalized, make an appointment with your hair stylist for a trial run. The earlier you make the appointment the better; six months in advance is advisable in case your stylist is already booked for your wedding day or you are unhappy with the style. This way, you’ll have plenty of time to find a new hairstyle or stylist if things don’t work out. If you don’t have a preferred stylist or need to explore other options, ask friends for recommendations or check out local wedding magazines like Akron-Canton Weddings. There are plenty of fabulous professionals out there and finding them is easy when you know where to look.

We’ve said it time and time again, but let’s hear it once more: the formality of your celebration will dictate everything from your gown silhouette to your hairstyle. When you visit your stylist for your first hair trial, arm yourself with the details. The two of you should discuss the formality of your wedding, the style and silhouette of your gown, and any accessories such as a tiara or veil that you plan to wear. Bring along a photo of your gown and the actual headpiece if possible so both of you can get a better feel for how everything will fit on the day of. Also, if you have certain hairstyles in mind, bring along sample photos. That way, the stylist will be able to get a better idea of what you’re looking for and make suggestions that will work with your hair.

Up vs. Down

A classic upsweep is still the most popular hairstyle for brides making their way down the aisle. But there are many ways to set yourself apart from the pack if you’re looking to wear your hair up. If your hair is long, a loose upsweep can give your hair a soft, more romantic look with loose curls spilling down and soft waves on the sides. A sleeker, more sophisticated look can be gained by pulling the hair tight toward the crown. You then have the option of large barrel shaped curls or a smooth upswept chignon, much like Julia Roberts wore at the Oscars a few years ago. But if your look is more playful than romantic or sophisticated, ditch the curls and go for modern knots at the top of the head and leave the ends loose. Most of these styles can be achieved easily with medium-length or long hair but if your hair is in-between, check with your stylist and see if he or she can add extensions or a hairpiece to fill out the look.

If an upsweep is too traditional or you have a certain feature that you’d like to minimize, say larger ears or a small scar on your neck, then you might consider wearing your hair down. Your stylist should be able to give you a few options different from your everyday look that might range from loose, whimsical curls to a chic, straight mane with turned-up ends. If you’re wearing a headpiece that needs an extra bit of oomph on top, you can also wear your hair half up and half down. The result will give you added height on top along with a soft cascade of length in the back.

To Curl or Not To Curl

There are many elements that should play into your decision whether to wear your hair curly or to wear it straight. During your first trial run with your hairstylist, share your wedding details such as the location, whether or not you’ll be dancing, and how long you expect the celebration will last.

While a good stylist will be able to create a look that lasts for you on your wedding day, outdoor celebrations, humid climates, and hours of swing dancing could take a toll on your style. The two of you can discuss your options, taking into account the texture of your hair and the type of products available to keep your hair in style.

Listen to his or her advice, but don’t compromise if he or she suggests a look that’s not you. The right hairstyle can make or break a wedding ensemble, and you don’t want to walk down the aisle with a hairstyle that’s not “you.”
