Lovely Locks – Hairstyle Trends for the 21st Century Bride

Most brides spend a significant amount of time searching for just the right gown, topped off with the perfect accessories from a stunning headpiece right down to fabulous footwear. And we're willing to bet that you've spent just as much time considering which hairstyle will best complement your overall look. Should you leave it down in loose, romantic curls that frame your face? Or should you go formal with a classic chignon that keeps the focus on your ensemble? The choice is yours, but a professional hairstylist can give you ideas and tips for keeping your locks from becoming, well, unlocked on your wedding day. Read on for a bit of mane event help, along with a breakdown of some of the more popular wedding day hairstyles and accessory trends to keep everything in place.

As soon as you have your wedding ensemble finalized, make an appointment with your hair stylist for a trial run. The earlier you make the appointment the better; six months in advance is advisable in case your stylist is already booked for your wedding day or you are unhappy with the style. Bring along a photo of your gown and the actual headpiece if possible so both of you can get a better feel for how everything will fit on the day of. Also, if you have certain hairstyles in mind, bring along sample photos. That way, the stylist will be able to get a better idea of what you're looking for and make suggestions that will work with your hair.

Up vs. down

A classic upsweep is still the most popular hairstyle for brides making their way down the aisle. But there are many ways to set yourself apart from the pack if you're looking to wear your hair up. If your hair is long, a loose upsweep can give your hair a soft, more romantic look with loose curls spilling down and soft waves on the sides. A sleeker, more sophisticated look can be gained by pulling the hair tight toward the crown. You then have the option of large barrel shaped curls or a smooth upswept chignon, much like Julia Roberts wore at the Oscars a few years ago. But if your look is more playful than romantic or sophisticated, ditch the curls and go for modern knots at the top of the head and leave the ends loose. Most of these styles can be achieved easily with medium-length or lo
